  About the Jewelry…   Jewelry

The innovative designs of my work are reflected in four lines of jewelry. The natural colors and patterns or whimsical shapes of semi-precious stones inspire and determine each line: wire wrapped cabochons (a precious or semi-precious stone having a convex shape, which has been highly polished but not faceted) with semi-precious stone necklaces, custom ear wires, cuttlebone casting and hand jewelry.

First, the color of a cabochon determines whether I use sterling silver wire or 14/20 karat gold-filled wire to build a wrap that embraces the stone. The shape and pattern of the cabochon determines the final design of the wire into a shape that will complement the stone. I then choose semi-precious stone beads that will complement the color and shape of the cabochon to make a necklace. Whenever possible, I hand tie each bead so the necklace will have a beautiful drape. If I listen carefully, the stone and wire will speak to me about how it wants to be finished.

Second, each necklace with cabochon determines the shape of an ear wire for earrings to complete the set. The ear wire will be a shaped into a circle, diamond or a modified “paper clip.” I use 20-gauge sterling silver or 14K gold-filled wire so that the wire will fit comfortably into all pierced ears. I also make an ear cuff earring for non-pierced ears, and earrings that are not part of a set.

Third, the natural organic texture of cuttlefish bone compliments the other lines of my work. I use it to cast sterling silver into rings, pendants and earrings for women and men.

Finally, I design hand jewelry that fits onto one finger and usually covers two fingers and part of the hand. I use 14 and 12-gauge wire formed into a distinct pattern of swirls and circles; which I then hammer to flatten; add texture and harden so it will keep its shape.

About Julie…

After bypass surgery in 1993, I looked for necklaces that would cover my scar.

I found a few, but most of them never hung quite right around my neck. Since then, I have become almost obsessed with learning everything I need to know to make jewelry, taking classes in jewelry fabrication and casting.

I started a small business called JUST ‘CAUSE CUSTOM JEWELRY because most of my necklaces are made to cover bypass scars--making it a just cause, and most women buy jewelry “just ‘cause” they want it. I try to use mostly organic shapes and unique natural stones in my designs whenever possible because my necklaces are worn close to the heart.

I am a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and the Metal Arts Association of Silicon Valley.
